Ash’s Inspiring Journey from Student to Mentor

Academic Advisor, Ash McQuaige.

When Ash first discovered dental assisting, she was searching for more than just a job — she was looking for purpose. Today, she has come full circle: from starting as a student, to becoming an instructor, and now serving as an Academic Advisor, helping others navigate the very path she once walked.

Finding a New Direction

Before stepping into the dental field, Ash worked as a call center supervisor in the Austin/Round Rock area, coordinating transportation for patients heading to medical appointments. While she enjoyed helping people, she felt something was missing. She wanted a career where her work could make a lasting difference.

That’s when she came across Austin Dental Assistant School in Round Rock. What stood out to her was how quickly she could begin a career, compared to the years it would take to complete a traditional degree. With her grandmother — who had spent more than 35 years in the dental field — in the back of her mind, she decided: “This is it — this is my way forward.”

Overcoming Challenges and Finding Support

Ash’s first day as a student was filled with excitement and nerves, but three instructors welcomed her warmly, answering every question and giving her the confidence she needed to dive in.

The biggest challenge, however, came at the very end. The day before graduation, she lost her grandmother to cancer. It was devastating, and she almost didn’t walk at the ceremony. But her instructors encouraged her to keep going, and in the end, she crossed the stage in honor of the person who had inspired her journey from the start.

Lessons and Memories as a Student

For Ash, Austin Dental Assistant School wasn’t just about gaining technical skills — it was about finding a supportive environment that pushed her forward. She remembers the fun (and sometimes awkward) practice sessions with classmates, especially when learning to take impressions and radiographs. Those shared laughs and challenges became the foundation of lifelong memories.

Returning as an Instructor

Years later, while looking for extra income, Ash stumbled upon a job posting for a dental assisting instructor — and jumped at the chance. Standing at the front of the class felt surreal at first, but she quickly realized how much her own experience as a student helped her connect with her class.

“I knew what it was like to sit in those seats, trying to take everything in while managing life outside of school,” she explained. That empathy shaped her teaching style — making sure to break down concepts clearly, check for understanding, and support students the way her own instructors had once supported her. Stepping Into the Role of Academic Advisor Though she loved teaching, Ash felt called to serve students on an even deeper level. Becoming an Academic Advisor allowed her to be the person students could lean on for encouragement, guidance, and reassurance. Now, she works from home alongside a team passionate about student success. And while her collection of brightly colored scrubs doesn’t get much use these days, her heart for helping others shines brighter than ever. Making a Difference One Student at a Time One story that stands out for Ash is that of a student who enrolled right after having a baby. Facing financial struggles, transportation issues, and no strong support system, she wanted to quit many times. Ash shared her own experiences, spent extra time listening, and reminded her she wasn’t alone. That student not only graduated, but also found a job in a dental office, building a stable future for herself and her child. “That transformation,” Ash says, “was incredible to witness.” How the Journey Changed Her Looking back, Ash sees how much this path has shaped her — both professionally and personally. It taught her patience, deep listening, and the power of encouragement. More than anything, it showed her the resilience of people who push through challenges to create a better future. Advice for Future Students For anyone considering enrolling in dental or medical assisting, Ash’s advice is simple: “Now is the best time to change your life. Be curious, ask questions, and give yourself permission to take that leap. You never know what doors it might open for you.”
